Five Storylines That Decide It
01 · The coordinator who switched sides
Penn State's defense is run by USC's old defensive coordinator.
D'Anton Lynn ran USC's defense through last season — he recruited and coached half the Trojan secondary that takes the field Saturday. Now he calls Penn State's defense. Nobody in that stadium knows USC's personnel better than the man game-planning against it. Watch how PSU plays USC's checks on third down: that's Lynn playing chess against his own old pieces.
02 · The homecoming
USC's starting linebacker used to run out of the home tunnel.
Ta'Mere Robinson (#14) — Pittsburgh kid, two knee ligaments torn in high school, a whole senior season lost, and Penn State stuck with him anyway. Two seasons a Nittany Lion, including the CFP semifinal team. Saturday he starts at linebacker against them, one game after his first career start produced 6 tackles, a TFL and a sack. Full file below.
03 · The desperation game
Penn State is 3–2, unranked, and out of mulligans.
First-year head coach Matt Campbell inherited the sport's loudest home game and arrives at it on a two-game skid — a home loss to Wisconsin as a 9.5-point favorite, then 34–13 at Northwestern as a favorite again. The White Out is the season's reset button or its funeral. Vegas still makes PSU the favorite by 1.5 — that number is pricing 107,000 people in white, not the last two Saturdays.
04 · The monster in the middle
Tony Rojas is having the best linebacker season in the country.
#13 Rojas: 34 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 3 sacks, 2 interceptions — the only player in FBS with 7.5+ TFL and 2+ picks. Maiava's protection calls against him are the game inside the game, and the man who taught USC's protections now coordinates the defense sending him.
05 · The slide vs. the skid
Somebody's narrative dies Saturday night.
USC hasn't beaten a ranked-caliber road environment under its current staff — the Trojans are 1–5 against the spread this season and haven't played in front of anything like this. Penn State has lost two straight to unranked teams. A ranked team that can't win big road games meets an unranked team that can't win at all right now. The numbers say one of those stories ends.

The quiet number: Penn State allows 16 a game — but that defense hasn't seen a passing offense like USC's, and the two teams that beat PSU did it by running right at the front Rojas anchors. The quiet number on the other side: USC is 1–5 against the spread — this team has underperformed expectations every single week but two.
PFF scores it strength-on-strength: USC's offense grades 92.1 and Penn State's defense 91.3 — with a 94.0 coverage unit, the best thing on either sideline. The soft spot is just as clear: Penn State's 60.9 pass-blocking against USC's 86.5 pass rush.
Availability — Latest Reports
USC
OUT — SEASON #9 Anderson WR — season-ending surgery, reported Thursday by On3
OUT #10 Simms WR · Reddick S · O'Connor OL · Marchetti LB · #50 T. Johnson LB
QUES #4 Mosley WR · #19 Bowman TE · #68 Treter LG · #4 Stewart DT · #97 Abasiri DT
If Abasiri and Stewart both can't go, the interior rotation thins exactly where Penn State's four-back run game wants to live.
Penn State
OUT (12) #6 Howard WR · #18 Granville DE · #11 Arrington II DE · #26 C. Smith LB · #80 Alexander TE · #43 Burnett DE · #15 J. Johnson CB · #35 Armstead CB · #42 M. Robinson DE · #66 Tompkins OL (season) · #30 Askew CB · #95 Rosa K
QUES #25 Tatsch LB · #91 Nnodim DT
The big one: Howard is their deep threat — 28.7 yards a catch. Without him, the big-play burden lands entirely on Becht's 15-plus-yard throws to Sowell and Brahmer.
Big Ten availability reports — USC updated Thursday evening; Penn State as of Wednesday. Final reports land ~2 hours before kick and this page updates then.

Player Dossier · The Homecoming
Ta'Mere Robinson: two torn ligaments, a lost senior year, 51 weeks of rehab — and a sack in his first career start.
The Pittsburgh kid Penn State stuck with comes home to the White Out wearing cardinal. No villain in this one — both sidelines made him.

The White Out, By The Numbers
106,000+ seats, every one in white — the 19th time Penn State has done it stadium-wide. It is the loudest regularly scheduled event in college football, and the home team treats it accordingly: the White Out is Penn State's signature weapon, saved for the opponent they most need to beat. This year they pointed it at USC — a program that hasn't set foot in Happy Valley in 32 years. Every Trojan on this roster will play in front of the biggest crowd of his life Saturday. So will most of the Nittany Lions.
